I was flipping through my big folder o’plants and flowers in iPhoto and came across a few I really liked this week, so that’s what you get until it warms up a wee bit more and things start blooming in the desert!

Puffs of fluff in San Diego

Fragile daisies in the backyard – and a bonus bumblebee!

Cholla (pronounced cho-ya) – meanest cactus in the desert

…but they sure do have pretty blooms…..200206061440639

Hopefully, we’ll get some sun this week and I can snap some new desert growth! Happy Friday!

I have something to say and it’s not pretty. I am entering uncharted waters here and my male readers may want to grab a life preserver in case they need to jump overboard. I need to get down to the nitty gritty. Men, this may be too much for you to bear, but if we can put up with the eight kajillion euphemisms you have for your peepee (yep, I said it) then you can just grin and bear it through this list.

I hate the word menstruation. It reminds me of sixth grade sex ed and then I get visions of rubbers on bananas and start freaking the fuck out. What if the banana isn’t the right size, what if it’s too pointy, oh dear God, so many things could go wrong! *Ahem* Back on track….I am not fond of period either. I don’t know why, it’s just weird. I’m on my period…if it’s extra short can I say I’m on my comma?  Sometimes a girl needs a more discreet euphemism for riding the cotton pony so next time you’re stuck, try one of these doozies out!

  1. Miss Scarlett’s Come Home to Tara
  2. Trolling for Vampires
  3. A Dishonorable Discharge from the Uterine Navy
  4. Saddling Old Rusty
  5. Feelin’ Menstru-riffic!
  6. Clean-Up in Aisle One
  7. Massacre at the Y
  8. T-Minus 9 Months and Holding
  9. Game Day for the Crimson Tide
  10. Panty Shields Up, Captain!
  11. Taking Carrie to the Prom
  12. Playing Banjo in Sgt. Zygote’s Ragtime Band
  13. Ordering l’Omelette Rouge
  14. Arts and Crafts Week at Panty Camp
  15. Rebooting the Ovarian Operating System
  16. Aunt Floe is visiting
  17. When the red flag flies over egypt it’s no man’s land…

What’s your favorite term for that time of the month? Happy Friday!

I live in the desert, I realize that. Because I do, I will NEVER have lush, green gardens overflowing with multicolored blooms, but I want them sooooooo badly! I was perusing my pictures the other night and once again drooled over a friend’s yard. This friend lives in Huntsville, Utah and has the greenest thumb ever! See for yourself….

The best part of her yard? She doesn’t plan anything. She just goes out and randomly starts throwing seeds or planting flowers and it grows into this beautiful madness.  I want a yard like this one day….

It’s no secret that I love California, southern California to be specific. If I could plant myself firmly somewhere close to the beach, I would and I would NEVER leave.  Here are a few floral reasons why…..100_2359

I think it’s quite possible that it’s all the fairy dust floating around. What do you think…..

I think I need to schedule a trip!

After writing two guest posts for bloggity friends this week, which you can read here and here (check this weekend for the second one…) I was stuck for my own fodder. What to do, what to do? Steal from someone else, of course! The fabulous Saintseester does an awesome weekly post called Fucking Floral Friday so I am jumping on her bandwagon.

Some people think the desert is dusty, brown and boring….here’s the proof that it’s not.

Those are cacti and some of our succulents in full bloom. You should see the desert in the spring after a big rain storm, there’s nothing like it on earth. Just in case flowers aren’t your thing, our sunsets kick ass too….

Happy Friday!

Anyone who says they have only one life to live

must not know how to read a book.

~ Author Unknown

I love to read.  Anyone who has known me for more than a nanosecond knows that books make me happy. When asked the question, “What do you read?” My answer is often “Everything.” I’m not kidding. I read it all.  Mystery/Thrillers, Chick Lit, SciFi/Fantasy, Young Adult, Non-fiction, there is nothing I will say no to reading.  I have oodles of books sitting on my shelf waiting to have their spines cracked.  In fact, I cleaned and organized my to be read piles the other day and counted.  I currently have 127 books sitting on the shelves in the bedroom anxious to have their pages turned and more will be added at the end of January when I head to Phoenix with Mamacita.  Phoenix means Bookman’s, my very favorite used book store ever!  I always have a few things to turn in, but love grabbing a basket and strolling around with my Amazon wish list (which currently has 497 books on it) in hand and selecting a dozen or more new books to take home to add to my collection.

That said, I have limited time to read for pleasure. I work full time, I have a family and I am currently taking classes through an online university working to finish my Bachelor’s Degree, to be followed immediately by my Master’s Degree.  I have a LOT of reading to do for my professional and school lives, not to mention the dozens of stories that are read to LW each week, so at the end of the day if I can manage to read five pages before falling into a coma, I consider that a success but it makes me a little sad.

Before I was a mom and before I decided to go back to school I read all the time. I would check 15 books out of the library in one fell swoop and have them finished before the three week loan period was up.  It was not uncommon for me to read upwards of 150 books in a year and I miss those days.  I need to get back to reading for me.  I am in the middle of my second annual 50 Books in a Year Challenge that was started by a fellow Newsvine subscriber.  His first challenge went from July 1, 2007 through June 30, 2008.  I finished all fifty of my selected books, but it wasn’t easy with the rest of my hurricane like life swirling around me.

I decided to do the challenge again this year and have fallen waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay behind. I need to catch up!   That means books go back into my purse to be read at lunch, books into the bathroom for soaks in the tub, books into the living room to be read while LW watches a cartoon or plays Wii. I will read, I will finish my 50 books again this year!

I want to live in a house filled with floor to ceiling bookshelves, covered not with knick knacks and tchotchkes, but books – thousands and thousands of books!  So far we have eighteen feet of bookshelves running along our entryway, and yes we do refer to it as the library. See?

I couldn’t quite fit the whole thing in, but you get the picture!  It has two big leather mission style chairs that are perfect for curling up with whatever you may pull off the shelf!  We also have books in every nook and cranny in our bedroom, our den and there are a few boxes of them in the garage.  I love my library and it’s beautiful shelves. I want to have dozens more of these shelves, we have the books, we just don’t have the wall space right now, but someday…….

*Drool* I would sweep all of the funky little statues off the shelves and cram them full of books. Then I would pick one at random, plop down in one of those comfy chairs and lose myself in the power of a story……..

How much do you like to read?
